On May 16th 2019, in Tuong Duong District, Nghe An Province, Prudential Vietnam Assurance (Prudential) in partnership with Vietnam Red Cross kicks off the construction of the first 5 houses in the “Safe House for community” project. The project aims at overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, stabilizing lives in provinces which is heavily affected by storms, as well as reducing the damages from upcoming calamities.

At the end of August 2018, the North and North Central Coast of Vietnam were heavily affected by the circulation of typhoon No. 4 (Hurricane Rebinca), causing a great loss of human, houses, and animals. The two provinces that suffered the most were Thanh Hoa and Nghe An. According to the statistics, there were 15 cases of death, 139 collapsed houses, nearly 7000 damaged and flooded houses, and more than 8900 households that need evacuating. Most of them are the poors, having many difficulties in rebuilding houses and stabilizing life after catastrophes. In term of livelihood, the number of dead cattle and poultry went up to 2000, meanwhile hundreds of crops squares were washed away.

Working toward a better life for people in damaged areas in these two provinces, Prudential implemented “Safe House for community” project with three main activities, including safe house construction, livelihood provision, and training in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaption.

The house construction kick-off ceremony is taken place in Xop Mat village, Luong Minh commune, Tuong Duong district, Nghe An province. In the event, Prudential organized the groundbreaking to set the foundation for the first 5 out of 30 houses, including 14 ones to be built in Nghe An and the rest built in Thanh Hoa. All houses are for those who lost their houses after storms. The house construction work is expected to complete and hand-over after two months, bringing firmer and safer houses for people in natural catastrophes.

Besides, Prudential has provided livelihood for 44 households, organized 3 training courses of safe house, 4 courses of DRR and CCA knowledge and skills enhancement for 110 people, and public talks to 550 citizens of 20 villages. Each activities of the project is designed to not only overcome consequences but also improve the DRR and CCA capability for community to deal with coming calamities.

Understanding natural disasters happen unexpectedly, Prudential has been taking actions to support disaster-prone areas throughout the years. In 2018, Prudential has financially supported VND1.5 billion to 11 provinces as emergency response. For disaster risk reduction, Prudential provided 15,000 fishermen and children in Vietnamese Central Coast with all safety equipment and skills training courses. The automated rain gauges were also installed for better local disaster forecast. Making effort in protecting environment, Prudential has implemented long-term strategy in Climate Change Adaptation and Environment Protection, with the first project towards plastic reduction in urban community.
